Abdalah Mokssit, third vice president of the World Meteorological Organization, has been named the new secretary of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the organization announced this week while meeting in Nairobi, Kenya. Mokssit replaces Mannava Sivakumar, who has been serving as acting secretary since January.
“I welcome the selection of Mr. Mokssit as the New IPCC Secretary. He brings to the position years of experience at the national, regional and global levels and UNEP looks forward to continuing to support the vital work of the IPCC, especially through the joint efforts of the UNEP-WMO Secretariat,” U.N. Environment Program Executive Director Achim Steiner said in an IPCC release.
The organization also agreed to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change request to develop a special report on impacts of global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways. That report will be released in 2018, according to an IPCC report.
