MACFARLANE MUM ON YUCCA LICENSING STRATEGY

By ExchangeMonitor
Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Allison Macfarlane remained mum yesterday at the American Nuclear Society’s Winter Meeting on the Commission’s strategy for restarting the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository license review.  Macfarlane told reporters after her speech at the meeting that no decisions have been made yet. The Commission is still considering all the information it collected from stakeholders after issuing an order to gather information on to best spend the limited funds the NRC had to restart the licensing review, but a direction forward should come soon. Many stakeholders suggested that the release of the Yucca Safety Evaluation Reports should be the first step taken by the Commission, and Macfarlane even listed that step as a priority in a letter House lawmakers from mid-October.
