Here’s a look at some of the events we will be following this week:
- Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will also be on hand at the U.S. Institute for Peace today at 12:30 p.m. for a conference on nuclear testing along with NNSA Administrator Frank Klotz, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller, Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty Organization Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo, and others.
- State Department Coordinator for Threat Reduction Programs Bonnie Jenkins will give a speech on “Nuclear Security and the Future” at noon Tuesday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, though the event is off the record.
- The Senate plans to vote on the two Nuclear Regulatory Commission nominations Tuesday. The nominees, Steven Burns and Jeffrey Baron, moved quickly through the hearing and committee process. Burns previously worked for the NRC, rising to General Counsel under then-Chairman Gregory Jaczko, but left in 2012 for a position with the Nuclear Energy Agency. Baran served as an aide to House Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) while also serving as Democratic staff director for the Energy and Environment Subcommittee.
- Sandia National Laboratories Director Paul Hommert, Los Alamos National Laboratory Director Charlie McMillan and Ames National Laboratory Director Adam Schwartz will address the “The Contribution of the National Laboratory System to U.S. National Security” in a talk at 6 p.m. Wednesday at George Washington University.
- The future of the nuclear triad will be the subject of a daylong conference Thursday on “The Strategic Nuclear Enterprise: Implementing the Roadmap Ahead.” The event features 14 speakers, including NNSA Administrator Frank Klotz, Global Strike Command chief Lt. Gen. Stephen Wilson, Strategic Command chief Adm. Cecil Haney, Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.).
