Boeing and Lockheed Martin are working with the Air Force on the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) guidance set, known as the Concept Design and Architecture Guidance (CDAG), to explore concept formulation, technology evaluations, and risk mitigation for the technology, according to spokespeople from those companies. The two defense giants are also contractors under the main structure currently governing Minuteman 3 contracting, the Future ICBM Sustainment and Acquisition Concept (FISAC). Boeing received a contract to maintain the FISAC Guidance Subsystem Jan. 8.
The effort is partly aimed at providing the Air Force a thorough assessment of potential risks that could follow the integration of a new guidance system. “Boeing is developing an optimal conceptual guidance system architecture and analyzing solutions to key performance requirements defined by the Air Force’s ICBM Future Systems Division,” company spokesperson Queena Jones told NS&D Monitor in an email. “The Boeing Directed Energy & Strategic Systems (DESS) team will analyze technology and manufacturing readiness for critical and enabling technologies, propose risk mitigation strategies, and recommend a test and evaluation strategy. Boeing will continue to evaluate GBSD opportunities as they arise.” Hill AFB is hosting an Industry Day for the GBSD from Feb. 18 to 20.
