Local government to formally support Diablo Canyon life-extension

By ExchangeMonitor

The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors planned to consider a resolution supporting a life extension for nearby Diablo Canyon during a meeting scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The board was to consider “a resolution that supports operation of Diablo Canyon Power Plant for 20 years,” according to an item on the agenda for the meeting, scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. Eastern time.

The state of California has approved a five-year life-extension for its last nuclear power plant, to 2030 from 2025. Plant operator Pacific Gas & Electric Co. in November applied for a 20-year license extension with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Antinuclear groups have sued the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in federal court of the planned life extension. In January, a panel of three circuit court judges heard arguments in the case but had not issued a decision as of Tuesday morning.
