The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory was to announce on Thursday the new director of the younger U.S. nuclear weapons design laboratory, according to a press release.
William Goldstein, the current director, announced last year that he would retire after six years in the top spot and 36 at the San Francisco Bay Area lab.
Livermore’s announcement was set for 2:30 p.m. Eastern time, according to the lab’s press release.
Lawrence Livermore National Security, a partnership led by the University of California and Bechtel National, manages Livermore under a roughly $2-billion-a-year contract awarded in 2007. The NNSA has one more option on the pact, which if exercised next year would stretch the deal out through fiscal year 2026, which runs through Sept. 30, 2025.
