A company called Last Energy announced Friday it hopes to build up to 30 micro-reactors on a 200-acre site in Northern Texas to help power data centers.
The company, which bills itself as a technology developer for 20-megawatt reactors, said in a press release it has already applied to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas for a connection to the power grid and also intends to file an early site permit with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
The project proposed for Haskell County, Texas could help the state meet the swelling power demand by the data center industry. The release said Texas is already home to 340 data centers. The release also says Las Energy was founded in 2019 by CEO Bret Kugelmass. The Kugelmass LinkedIn page said he was previously managing director for the Energy Impact Center, which is a research institute, who has also founded a drone fleet technology company.
Last Energy is also a founding member of a recently-formed group called the Texas Nuclear Alliance, which also lists X-energy and King & Spalding among its members.
