Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking subcontractors to aid in decontamination efforts that result in reducing the waste classification of certain components, according to a sources sought notice issued this week on FedBizOpps. The aim of the contract is to reduce transuranic contaminated material down to a low-level waste form for disposal. All of the work will take place within existing LANL facilities, and responses to the notice are due on Aug. 6.
According to the notice, the efforts focus on decontamination of metal surfaces and kynar lined surfaces. “The subcontractor shall provide a decontamination process and recommendations that are consistent with standard industry practices, health and safety, and environmental regulatory requirements,” the notice says. “Specifically, the process shall identify a method of decontamination for metal surfaces and kynar lined surfaces (including removal of kynar lining if needed to reach LLW levels) which will minimize waste generation, will utilize to the extent possible non-hazardous chemicals, and will include a waste management plan that ensures any and all wastes generated in the process can be managed in compliance, and have an existing path forward for disposal in compliance with State and Federal regulations.”
