The National Nuclear Security Administration is preparing to lease office warehouse and storage space in northern New Mexico and Colorado, according to a notice posted online late last week.
The semiautonomous Department of Energy nuclear weapons agency is considering leases within a 150-mile radius of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, according to an environmental impact notice posted online Thursday.
“The proposed action does not include construction of new facilities or other structures. Changes in local land use and zoning will not be required,” the National Nuclear Security Administration wrote in the notice. “Pre-existing structures and infrastructure will be consistent with current uses.”
Los Alamos is in the midst of an expansion to convert its PF-4 plutonium facility into a plutonium pit factory that is supposed to produce 30 of the fissile nuclear-weapon cores annually by fiscal year 2026, which runs through Sept. 30, 2026.
In addition to expanding facilities on site, the remote mountain lab is also building support structures such as parking areas and office space. Aside from the warehouse and storage space it may lease in the region, Los Alamos is also procuring office space in Santa Fe.
