John Kotek will officially serve as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy, according to an internal memo from Assistant Secretary Pete Lyons released this week. As first reported by RW Monitor last week, Kotek, the former staff director for the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future, fills the No. 2 position in the Office of Nuclear Energy currently held in an acting capacity by Dennis Michael Miotla, who also serves as NE’s Chief Operating Officer. “I’m pleased to announce that John Kotek will be joining the Office of Nuclear Energy as my Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the coming weeks,” Lyons said. “John has more than 25 years of experience in the nuclear energy field and has a long history of working in the Department on nuclear issues.” Kotek will be responsible for implementing the Department of Energy’s strategy for managing spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive wastes while also overseeing the nation’s nuclear energy research and development programs and infrastructure.
Kotek previously served as Principal of Gallatin Public Affairs, where he also held the position of Head of its Energy Policy & Facility Siting Practice Group. His previous positions also include having served as Deputy Manager of the DOE Idaho Operations Office and as a Congressional fellow in the office of former Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM).
