Shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries said Wednesday that Michael Smith will become president of subsidiary Stoller Newport News Nuclear (SN3) effective immediately. Smith has been Huntington Ingalls’ executive vice president for strategy and development.
In his new post, Smith will report to Michael Lempke, president of Huntington Ingalls’ nuclear and environmental group. As president of SN3, Smith will be part of the Technical Solutions division at HII, which includes the nuclear and environmental group. Technical Solutions employs more than 5,000 people.
At the corporate level, the company also said its executive vice president for internal audit, Scott Stabler, has been named executive vice president and chief transformation officer. In the newly-created post, Stabler will report to Huntington Ingalls President and CEO Mike Petters.
Earlier this month HII said SN3 President Nick Lombardo had been tapped to lead the management team for the joint venture recently awarded the $1.39 billion legacy cleanup contract at the Energy Department’s Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. The contract was won in December by Newport News Nuclear BWXT-Los Alamos. SN3 has also done waste management services for DOE at locations including the Hanford Site in Washington state, and the Idaho National Laboratory.
Smith joined HII in 2014 as corporate vice president for business growth. He previously worked for BAE Systems.
Stabler joined Newport News Shipbuilding in 1984 and has held a variety of management positions since then.
