The House Oversight interior, energy, and environment subcommittee will meet on Tuesday for a hearing to assess the management and storage of U.S. nuclear waste.
The intention of the hearing is to consider management of what is now more than 76,000 metric tons of nuclear waste that remains in storage at nuclear plants across the nation even though Congress 35 years ago demanded that the federal government site and build a permanent repository for the material, according to a notice from the panel.
The hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Rayburn House Office Building Room 2154. The witnesses will be: Anthony O’Donnell, a member of the Maryland Public Service Commission and chair of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, Subcommittee on Nuclear Issues – Waste Disposal; Chuck Smith, an Aiken County, S.C., councilmember representing the Energy Communities Alliance; David Victor, chairman of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Community Engagement Panel; and Katie Tubb, a policy analyst with the Heritage Foundation’s Institute for Economic Freedom.
