House Appropriations Energy and Water Development subcommittee Chairman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) expressed concern about the rising costs of the Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility project at a budget hearing yesterday. Frelinghuysen noted the “limited funds” available to NNSA programs. “We don’t want this to suck up everything. There are a lot of things we need to do, cleanups,” he said. The MOX project is currently undergoing a rebaselining effort and is expected to increase in cost by as much as $2 billion over its current $4.86 billion baseline.

NNSA acting Administrator Neile Miller replied that “it’s a very expensive project,” but said it was too early to give an amount on the cost increase. “We are in the middle of the analysis of the baseline change proposal for that project. So for that purpose, because that has not been fully vetted through us yet, I am reluctant to give you a number,” she said, adding, “There are a lot of numbers floating around out there, but it is very safe to say we are looking at a considerable cost increase.”
