Two members of the House Appropriations Committee, one a Washington state Republican who voted to impeach Donald Trump, and the other a member of congress from Ohio for more than 40 years, are still clinging to small leads in their races.
Based on figures filed with the Washington secretary of state office Saturday night, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.) continued to hold the lead over GOP challenger Jerrod Sessler, a veteran and former NASCAR racer backed by Trump in Washington’s 4th District. Newhouse had almost 52% of the vote and a lead of more than 12,000 votes over Sessler. Newhouse was listed with more than 127,500 votes to Sessler’s 115,000.
Election results are certified by each Washington county on Nov. 26, according to the state website. The secretary of state certifies final results by Dec. 5.
In Ohio’s 9th congressional district, Democrat Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) has far more of a squeaker on her hands. With more than 366,000 votes cast, Kaptur is clinging to a 1,200-vote edge over Republican challenger Derek Merrin, according to Ohio election results. Kaptur is listed with more than 48.1% of the vote and Merrin 47.8%. A Libertarian candidate garnered 4% of the vote.
Merrin is state representative from Lucas County serving his fourth term in the Ohio legislature, according to his online bio.
A Toledo, Ohio native, Kaptur was first elected to congress in 1982 and in recent years has been either chair or ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations energy and water development subcommittee.
