Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), who has used his seat on the House Appropriations Committee to support funding for the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory, has again won the GOP nomination to represent the state’s 2nd Congressional district.
Simpson received over half the votes cast in Tuesday’s Republican primary, defeating two GOP challengers, the Idaho Capital Sun reported Wednesday morning. Simpson won nearly 55% of the ballots with the rest divided between Scott Cleveland (36%) and Sean Higgins (9%), according to results posted on the state elections website.
In the November general election, Simpson will match up against Democrat David Roth, who is openly gay, ran unopposed in his party’s primary, and claimed more than 17,000 votes. Roth ran an unsuccessful Senate race in November 2022, losing to incumbent Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) 61% to 29%.
A video of a 2022 interview with Roth is available on Youtube.
In November 2022, Simpson won about 64% of the general election vote over Democrat Wendy Norman. Simpson has been endorsed by former president Donald Trump.
