Holtec to discuss quality assurance plan for Palisades restart with NRC next week

By ExchangeMonitor

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will host a virtual public meeting on April 29 to hear about Holtec International’s quality assurance plan for the planned restart of the Palisades Nuclear Generating Station in Michigan.

Holtec will submit the plan after the meeting, according to a notice the NRC filed online this Tuesday.

During the virtual gathering, to begin at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time, members of the public may ask questions of the commission staff or make comments about Holtec’s description of its proposed quality assurance plan, which the Jupiter, Fla., company will present at the beginning of the meeting.

Comment periods in past public NRC meetings about the proposed Palisades restart have drawn praise from local business representatives and government officials in Covert County, Mich., and condemnation from local members of environmental and activist groups.

Holtec plans to restart Palisades by September 2025. In March, the Department of Energy entered into a conditional loan agreement with the company, under which the federal government would provide about $1.5 billion to help with the restart.

Among other things, Palisades needs a new steam generator that Hotlec estimates will cost about $510 million.
