The Senate Foreign Relations Committee planned Wednesday to hold a hearing on arms control with the state department official in charge of the portfolio.
The hearing was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Eastern time in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, room 419. The Honorable Bonnie D. Jenkins, the undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security at the State Department, was the sole scheduled witness.
The last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between the U.S. and Russia, New START expires in February 2026.
The Joe Biden (D) administration and Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, extended New START when Biden entered office, but relations between the two nuclear adversaries have worsened since.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, many top U.S. officials were sanctioned by Russia in retaliation for U.S. sanctions on Russian officials. Russia suspended participation in New START in March 2023, spurning Washington’s offers to allow Russian inspectors into the U.S. in spite of Ukraine-related sanctions.
