Leidos-led Mission Support Alliance, the landlord services provider at the Department of Energy’s Hanford Site in Washington state, awarded a $13-million subcontract for local firm Fowler General Construction to build a new water treatment plant.
The new facility would replace the current 1940s vintage plant and automate water services and support treatment of tank waste at the former plutonium production complex, Hanford DOE officials said Tuesday in a press release.
“The new facility will ensure we can support several years of 24/7 operations to treat millions of gallons of low-activity tank waste while also meeting the demands of our risk-reduction operations at Hanford,” said Jeff Frey, the assistant manager for mission support at the Richland Operations Office, said in the release.
The new facility will be able to produce at least 3.5 million gallons daily and can be expanded to provide 5 million gallons daily should demand increase.
The Richland, Wash.-based Fowler is expected to start construction of the new 10,000-square-foot facility in April 2021.
Mission Support Alliance published a procurement notice for the new facility in April. The plant would be located in the 200 West Area of Hanford, about 29 miles north of the city of Richland.
