Two assistant managers at one of the Department of Energy offices at the Hanford Site in Washington state have switched positions as part of a plan to build up its capabilities by providing opportunities for professional development.
Glyn Trenchard, previously Office of River Protection (ORP) assistant manager for tank farms, has been named assistant manager for technical and regulatory support. Rob Hastings, who previously held that position, has been named assistant manager for tank farms. Both have performed “superbly” and will help position the office for the transition to Waste Treatment Plant operations, said Brian Vance, ORP manager.
Trenchard has worked at ORP since 1998, and Hastings has worked for DOE at Hanford since 1988.
The Office of River Protection primarily oversees management of 56 million gallons of chemical and radioactive waste stored in underground tanks at Hanford, a former plutonium production complex. Contractor Bechtel National is building the Waste Treatment Plant, which is scheduled by 2023 to begin converting Hanford’s low-activity waste into a glass form for disposal.
The office’s budget is set at $1.57 billion in the current federal fiscal year, more than the $1.44 billion the Department of Energy requested and slightly above the $1.56 appropriated in the prior budget.
The Energy Department’s Richland Operations Office oversees most other cleanup jobs at Hanford. Its budget is set at $865 million in the fiscal year that began Oct. 1, a large spike from the $658 million DOE request and a $2 million step up from the last appropriation.
