Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS), the tank management contractor for the Energy Department’s Hanford Site in Washington state, has issued a request for information (RFI) for subcontractors interested in doing construction work inside the tank farm.
WRPS expects to issue a formal request for proposals (RFP) during the final quarter of fiscal 2018, which ends Sept. 30. Responses to the RFI will be due June 11, WRPS said in a notice posted online.
The notice said work done inside the tank farm is some of the most hazardous done at the Hanford Site. “The primary hazards involved include radiological, asbestos, lead, beryllium, and chemical vapors,” according to the notice. “Inside the Tank Farm work activities are performed using respiratory protection equipment and anti-contamination clothing.”
The notice urges prospective subcontractors to be pre-qualified for this type of work. The point of contact for the planned procurement is Mark Friend, [email protected].
The contractor, WRPS, is a limited liability corporation with AECOM and SNC-Lavalin subsidiary Atkins, with Orano (previously AREVA), as its primary subcontractor. The Energy Department recently proposed a contract extension for WRPS, from Oct. 1, 2018, through Sept. 30, 2019. The contractor signed its existing 10-year, $6.1 billion deal in May 2008.
The WRPS contract duties include management and upkeep of 177 waste along with modifying tank farms for feeding the Low-Activity Waste Pretreatment System. The pretreatment system will funnel tank waste to a Waste Treatment Plant being built by Bechtel National to solidify the Cold War-era, radioactive waste.
