The South American nation of Guyana Friday announced the ratification of the Paris Agreement making it the 17th nation to join. “The early ratification of the Paris Agreement is consistent with the stated commitment of the Government of Guyana to strong action towards the mitigation of and adaptation to climate change,” according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release.
The Paris Agreement will enter into force once 55 nations representing at least 55 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions have joined. Guyana represents only .01 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Added to the other 16 nations to join the agreement, the current total of greenhouse gas emissions represented is .04 percent.
