GROUP PUSHES AGAINST ONSITE DISPOSAL AT PADUCAH MEETING

By ExchangeMonitor

Activists pushed against on-site disposal cells at the Paducah and Portsmouth sites and other issues at a meeting held last night by local governments in the Paducah area. Members of the group Neighbors for an Ohio Valley Alternative made a case against the potential on-site disposal of waste at both sites, presenting at a meeting held by the Paducah City Commission and McCracken County Fiscal Court on the transition of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Gary Vander Boegh of the group told WC Monitor that he opposes a CERCLA cell at Paducah, calling it a “a monument to the radioactive contamination of the whole community.” The group is also calling for the site ownership to be transferred from the Department of Energy to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the reallocation of funds from USEC’s American Centrifuge project to cleanup efforts at both sites.
