    Michigan is supporting the first-of-a-kind restart of a permanently shut down reactor. In South Dakota, supporters of House Bill 1071 say the bill updates the legal language, and is the first step of a process in potentially having nuclear power in the state. The Kentucky Senate voted overwhelmingly to lay the foundation to attract nuclear energy projects to a state where coal has dominated and fueled the economy for generations. Who’s Next?

    Nuclear Regulatory Commission Integrated Rule Making

    Panelists will discuss the implications for the industry on the NRC’s proposed Integrated Rule-making.  The NRC has released/will release a significant change to their rules regarding low-level radioactive waste disposal in found in 10 CFR Part 61. The proposed rule will require that a Performance Assessment be conducted and includes compliance time periods for short and long-lived isotopes.  The rule will be accompanied by a guidance document to assist agreement states in evaluating license applications.  In addition, the proposed rule will include a framework for states to license the disposal of Greater-Than-Class C waste at a near surface disposal facility.

    Cleanup to Clean Energy Initiatives

    Through the Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative, DOE will leverage areas that were previously used to protect our national security and will repurpose them to the same end—this time, generating clean energy that will help save the planet and protect our energy independence and transform the lands used over decades for nuclear security and environmental remediation to build some of the largest clean energy projects in the world. DOE’s Office of Environmental Management, Office of Nuclear Energy, and National Nuclear Security Administration have identified about 70,000 acres for potential development at five sites, Hanford, Idaho National Laboratory, Nevada National Security Site, Savannah River Site and Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.  What happens next?

    The Impacts of Federal Cybersecurity Activities on the DOE Field Sites

    In December of 2024, OMB issued a memo instructing agencies on how they will report their cyber posture to the White House. This memo continued the expansion of cyber security requirements from the traditional Information Technology (IT) environment (think desktop computers) to DOE’s Operational Technology (OT) environment (think control rooms, SCADA systems).

    This is a panel discussion with Federal and Site officials will discuss how new cyber requirements will impact traditional information technology networks and continue to expand into the Operational Technology (OT) environment. This includes reporting on how encryption, multi-factor authentication, and other elements of zero trust architectures. We will explore the short-term (FY24/25) impacts and longer-term (FY26+) impacts of this, and identify ways to mitigate the impact on the DOE mission.
