Global Medical Isotope Systems is set to complete the acquisition of Oak Ridge, Tenn.-based Manufacturing Sciences Corp from EnergySolutions by the end of this month, according to GMIS CEO Zane Wilson. Wilson said Global Medical Isotope Systems doesn’t plan to make any major changes to MSC, which he described as a “perfectly functioning company.” The Oak Ridge facility will continue its existing missions, most of which involve the processing of depleted uranium for nuclear shielding and other products, he said. He said the 40 or so employees at MSC will be retained and the name will remain the same. He said he hopes to grow the business, supplementing some of MSC’s work with exotic metals, and add employees in the future.

The Oak Ridge facility will not be used for production of radioisotopes, which is reportedly the main business of Las Vegas-based GMIS. Wilson said the company’s main website had been taken down to add information on the acquisition of MSC, but a summary of the company’s work is posted on the site of Redhills Ventures LLC — which Wilson described as “one of our primary investors.” According to the website, GMIS “provides patent-pending systems for the production of medical isotopes for the nuclear medicine imaging industry.”

The website states, “By introducing our safe, decentralized, on-demand production system we answer the critical supply needs of the industry while complying with nonproliferation objectives of the United States.” It adds, “The system technology is also scalable, allowing for custom deployments and ability to respond to unplanned needs. We intend to both operate facilities which supply nuclear pharmacies and to license the technology to other operators on a regional basis. By moving from the huge infrastructure required for reactor-based production to our system we are providing patients and doctors a much needed, secure, reliable source of isotopes.”
