The Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute announced Wednesday it has been accepted for membership in the United Nations Global Compact. “The Institute takes its advocacy efforts in the UN system and [United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change] very seriously, and is demonstrating this by publicly committing to support and advance the principles of the UNGC,” Global CCS Institute CEO Brad Page said in a press release. “We will continue to strongly engage in the UN system in the pursuit of evidence-based advocacy to represent the policy case for CCS in the context of climate change mitigation.”
The U.N. Global Compact is an initiative built on commitments by CEOs to implement universal sustainability principles and to support U.N. goals. “We are very pleased to be able to expand our engagement network to include the UNGC to complement our already extensive affiliations within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change,” Page said.
The institute also announced Wednesday that it itself has gained a new member.
The Rotterdam, Netherlands, Capture and Storage Demonstration Project (ROAD) officially joined the institute, according to an announcement Wednesday. “ROAD aims to capture 1.1 million tonnes of CO2 per annum from the flue gases of Maasvlakte Power Plant 3 (MPP3) using post combustion capture technology provided by Fluor. The captured CO2 will be transported by pipeline and injected into a depleted gas fields under the North Sea,” the institute said in a press release.
The ROAD project has experienced significant delays and was all but mothballed in 2012, but “all stakeholders have made substantial progress in closing the funding gap, and the project now expects to remobilise this year and be operational by the beginning of 2020,” according to the institute.
“Members are presented a valuable opportunity to be an integral part of a collaborative, informed and influential international community at the forefront of CCS advocacy, policy development and knowledge sharing,” according to the Global CCS Institute website.
