Global CCS Institute: CCS Essential to Meeting Paris Agreement Goal

By ExchangeMonitor

Carbon capture and storage is required if the world is to limit global warming to 1.5°C – 2°C, as called for in the Paris Agreement, Global CCS Institute CEO Brad Page wrote in an institute article published Monday. “Independent, credible forecasts are that by 2040 the world will still be predominantly reliant on energy from fossil fuels, even with unprecedented growth in the deployment of renewables and energy efficiency,” Page noted in the article marking 100 days after the agreement was approved

While most of the world’s emissions are from the power sector, and could thus be eliminated eventually by switching to renewable energy forms, 25 percent of global CO2 emissions result from industrial sector processes. Even if fossil fuels fall out of favor for energy generation, the only way to reduce these industrial sector emissions is with CCS, Page stated: “It’s clear that industrial emissions of CO2 will remain a problem into the future. We must reduce industrial emissions as part of the overall solution. CCS is the only solution.”
