Germany, which has increased its use of fossil fuel energy generation since closing all of its nuclear power plants following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi disaster in Japan, expects to end coal-fired power generation “well before” 2050, Reuters reported. According to a draft document seen by the wire service, the government is establishing a committee to develop recommendations on how to cut coal out while taking into consideration industry workers.
The environment ministry draft has not received approval from other government ministries. The government is expected to issue a climate action plan this summer, according to the article.
According to the International Energy Agency, coal-fired generation provided 47 percent of Germany’s electricity in 2013.
