The Nuclear Regulatory Commission appointed Mirela Gavrilas as its executive director for operations, effective July 28, the agency announced Wednesday in a press release.
Gavrilas will become the organization’s chief operating officer, responsible for its day-to-day activities and administration and acting as a link between the politically appointed commission members and the agency’s career staff.
Gavrilas is “is well poised to lead the NRC staff as we tackle challenges and embrace new opportunities, particularly after the recent passage of the ADVANCE Act,” NRC Chair Christopher Hanson said in the press release.
Gavrilas was most recently head of the NRC’s Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response, where she had worked since 2020. She joined NRC in 2004, according to the commission’s release.
Gavrilas will replace Raymond Furstenau, who had been the acting executive director at NRC since Jan. 27, when Daniel Dorman, the last full-time director, retired after about six years with the NRC.
