The Government Accountability Office expects to publish several major reports on Department of Energy nuclear remediation issues over the next several months, according to the congressional watchdog agency.
Nathan Anderson, director of the Natural Resources & Environment unit for the Government Accountability Office (GAO), said between now and December a report on H Canyon at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina, should be released.
A list from Anderson’s office provides a glimpse of some nuclear other topics GAO expects to explore in the coming months.
December: GAO will publish a report on what DOE is doing to address United States nuclear weapons contamination in Spain, Greenland, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
February 2024: GAO plans to examine DOE’s Office of Environmental Management, program management protocols.
March 2024: A report is scheduled to focus on Environmental Management workforce issues.
May 2024: Quality assurance efforts for Environmental Managements capital asset projects will be the subject.
June 24: A report is scheduled to focus on DOE Office of Environmental Management public stakeholder engagement. Also in June: A report into the high-level radioactive tank waste at the Hanford Site in Washington state and alternative approaches to treating that waste.
The GAO audits government programs as directed by congress, with many reports often assigned via the annual National Defense Authorization Act.
