A former Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) employee must pay over $32,000 in restitution as part of her sentence for embezzling money from the Department of Energy. Theresa Romero, a former office administrative assistant at SNL, used a procurement card issued to her as an employee to make unauthorized purchases between September2010 and August 2011, according to her plea agreement. Romero was sentenced last Friday for theft of government property in U.S. District Court in New Mexico to three years of probation and is required to pay $32,542.37 in restitution to the National Nuclear Security Administration. She must also “complete a community-based program which provides education and training in financial management” as part of her sentence. A lab spokesman said in a statement that “Sandia cooperated fully with the Department of Energy’s Office of the Inspector General to bring this case to resolution.”
