The Senate on Friday confirmed a former national security adviser to Vice President Mike Pence as undersecretary of state for arms control and international security.
The Senate confirmed Andrea Thompson by a voice vote. A retired U.S. Army colonel, Thompson was most recently a special adviser at State’s Office of Policy Planning.
In her new role, Thompson will coordinate the State Department’s nonproliferation and arms-control policies, including treaty negotiations. The undersecretary oversees the department’s Bureaus of Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance; International Security and Nonproliferation; and Political-Military Affairs.
Rose Gottemoeller, now deputy secretary general at NATO, previously held the post from 2012 to 2016.
