Former Rep. David Hobson (R-Ohio), who as a leader of the House Appropriations Committee helped shape Department of Energy nuclear programs for nearly 20 years, died Sunday at 87, media reported this week.
Ohio Gov. Mark DeWine (R) released a statement about Hobson’s death on Sunday.
Hobson retired in 2008 after nine terms in the House of Representatives. He eventually rose to become the ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Energy and Water Development subcommittee.
Hobson had the leadership post on the appropriations panel for six years. During his time in Congress, he supported the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain and opposed the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator, Reliable Replacement Warhead and Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication programs.
Also in Congress, Hobson helped require the mandatory recompete of DOE contracts that had not been subject to competition for 50 years.
