A single-owner team led by Battelle Memorial Institute will manage the Savannah River National Laboratory for up to 10 years under a potentially $3.8 billion contract announced Tuesday by the Department of Energy.
Battelle Savannah River Alliance, LLC (BSRA), Columbus, Ohio, beat out three other bidders for the cost-plus-award-fee contract just awarded by DOE’s Environmental Management (EM) Office. The pact has a five-year base and five one-year options that can vest annually if the new contractor meets performance benchmarks set by DOE.
This is the first time in the history of the cleanup office that the South Carolina lab has had its own manager. Currently, the Fluor-led Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) manages the lab as part of the company’s Savannah River Site management and operations contract. The SRNS contract, extended multiple times already, expires Sept. 31, but DOE holds another one-year option on the deal. BSRA’s contract, meanwhile, has a 120-day transition period tacked on to the front end.
Battelle’s subcontractors are: Clemson University, Georgia Tech Research Corporation, South Carolina State University, University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc., University of South Carolina, plus industry subs Longenecker & Associates and TechSource.
Savannah River National Laboratory focuses on technology development for EM’s radioactive waste cleanup mission but also contributes technology for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s nonproliferation and tritium missions.
