An environmental group continued to raise objections with a regional water authority about the decommissioning of the Three Mile Island Unit 2 reactor after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission effectively rejected the groups concerns last week.
The NRC, through the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, on March 1 rejected Three Mile Island Alert’s contention to a license amendment request for Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station’s Unit 2, being decommissioned by EnergySolutions subsidiary TMI-2 Solutions.
The NRC board also denied a request by the environmental group’s chair, Eric Epstein, to amend the contention.
Three Mile Island Alert had said TMI-2 Solutions’ decommissioning plan failed to consider water use restrictions imposed by regional water authority the Susquehanna River Basin Commission.
In a Friday press release, Three Mile Island Alert said that “TMI-2 Solutions will not be able to access waste for the TMI-2 cleanup until after TMI-1’s [Three Mile Island Unit 1’s] decommissioning is completed in 2079.” The group cited an email exchange, posted online, between itself and the Susquehanna River Basin Commission as evidence.
