The Department of Energy is set to award the new M&O contract for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant by the end of this week. In a letter to bidders April 13, obtained by WC Monitor, DOE said the award decision is anticipated to be announced on April 20. DOE has also proposed to the bidders conducting ‘open book’ debriefs after the award is made, though all bidders will have to agree to such a process for it to be carried out.
The new WIPP contract, generally seen as the last major near-term contracting opportunity in DOE’s cleanup program, is set to be worth $135 million annually and to run for up to 10 years, consisting of a five-year base period and a five-year option period, according to DOE. Four teams are believed to have submitted bids last summer for the new contract—URS-B&W-AREVA, Bechtel-EnergySolutions, CH2M Hill-Stoller and Fluor-Jacobs-Weston. URS is the lead company in longtime incumbent Washington TRU Solutions, which also includes Weston and whose contract is currently scheduled to end in September 2012.
