Approximately $6.7 million in federal funding is available for cost-shared projects to develop carbon utilization technologies for coal-fired power plants, the Department of Energy announced Thursday. “DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy is seeking these projects as part of the Department’s Carbon Storage program, which has the goal of developing and advancing technologies to improve the effectiveness of carbon storage, reduce the cost of implementation, and be ready for widespread commercial deployment in the 2025–2035 timeframe,” the department said in a press release.
The funding is being provided for three areas of interest: biological-based concepts for beneficial use of CO2; mineralization concepts using CO2 with industrial wastes; and novel physical and chemical processes for beneficial use of carbon.
The agency expects to select up to eight projects: a maximum of six in the first two areas of interest, each receiving up to $1 million; and up to eight projects in the third area, each receiving up to $800,000. Applicants must fund at least 20 percent of the total project costs.
Applications are due Oct. 3 and can be submitted online at FedConnect.
