The Department of Energy is making available $125 million in funding for innovative clean energy technologies, including carbon capture and storage, through the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) program, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz announced this week. “We’re going to put out $125 million for new, novel technologies, ideas across the entire spectrum, as long as the technology is [clean]. That is it advances a low emissions agenda,” Moniz said at an event hosted by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. “The first round, 2009, had well over 3,000 initial submissions for what ended up to be 35 awards, so you can understand, these are a challenge. However, we believe they are crucial in really opening the aperture to all the good ideas that may come in in.”
According to the Financial Assistance Funding Opportunity Announcement released this week, APRA-E expects to award 30 to 50 projects with funding between $1-10 million each. However, the document states, “ARPA-E will provide support at the highest funding level only for applications with significant technology risk, aggressive timetables, and careful management and mitigation of the associated risks.” Notices of Intent must be submitted by Feb. 20 and concept papers are due by Feb. 27 for those interested.
