As the competition for the new Idaho Cleanup Project (ICP ) Core contract moves forward, the Department of Energy is gearing up to extend the two current cleanup contracts at the Idaho site. This week, DOE notified CH2M-WG Idaho (CWI) and Idaho Treatment Group, LLC, that it plans to “pursue a contract extension to align with the projected award” of the new ICP Core contract. “This contract extension will ensure uninterrupted service and ongoing operations while continuing to satisfy agency requirements,” DOE said in letters sent to the two contractors. CWI and ITG’s contracts are each currently set to expire on Sept. 30, 2015, and in its letters, DOE did not specify how long any planned extension would run.
Bids for the new ICP Core contract, which is intended to replace those held by CWI and ITG, are currently due by May 12. The contract represents one of the few major near-term business opportunities in the DOE cleanup program, and is anticipated to be worth approximately $1.5 billion over five years. Currently, Fluor appears to be the most likely to lead a bid for the new Idaho contract, and is believed to have assembled a team that includes CH2M Hill. It remains to be seen which other, if any, DOE contractors also choose to pursue the job; Bechtel has reportedly suspended major work on a bid but is believed to have not entirely ruled out participating in the competition.
