The Department of Energy is gearing up for the procurement for a new contract to operate DOE’s two depleted uranium hexafluoride conversion plants, announcing Dec. 8 that a draft Request for Proposals for the contract is expected to be released within 45 days. DOE also released this week a draft performance work statement for the new contract, but said it is not taking comment on it at this time.
The two DUF6 conversion plants, located at DOE’s Portsmouth and Paducah sites, are currently managed by B&W Conversion Services, LLC, under a contract set to expire at the start of 2016. The plants are intended to help disposition more than 700,000 metric tons of material stored in thousands of cylinders at the two sites. DOE has previously announced that the new contract to operate the plants will be competed on an unrestricted basis.
