Utah-based EnergySolutions and Texas-based Waste Control Specialists (WCS) have been awarded Energy Department contracts to dispose of low-level radioactive waste (LLW) and mixed-low level radioactive waste.
The contracts are indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (ID/IQ) agreements, DOE said in a press release. It did not provide dollar values for the contracts.
The two vendors will compete for task orders that will have fixed-price-unit rates, with provisions for price updates to account for taxes and fees, DOE said.
EnergySolutions and Waste Control Specialists operate three of the four active U.S. facilities licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for disposal of low-level radioactive waste. The fourth is US Ecology’s facility on DOE’s Hanford Site in Washington state.
Under these contracts, the two companies would take waste generated from cleanup and remediation work at sites across the DOE complex. The waste would go to WCS’ complex in Andrews County, Texas, or EnergySolutions’ site in Clive, Utah.
The types of waste covered under the contracts are:
- Class A, B, and C LLW and MLLW;
- 11e(2) byproduct material;
- Technology enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material (TENORM); and
- Certain sealed sources.
