The Department of Energy this week announced that Michael Goff has started as the number-two official for the agency’s nuclear energy office, according to a press release.
Goff, who most recently served as a senior advisor to DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy (NE), will now oversee the division’s research and development portfolio as its principal deputy assistant secretary, DOE said in Tuesday’s press release. In the role, Goff will “support the nation’s transition to a 100 percent clean energy economy,” DOE said.
“Dr. Goff is a seasoned professional who has distinguished himself as a leader in nuclear science and energy both domestically and abroad,” Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Kathryn Huff said in a statement. “It’s been a joy to work with Mike as a senior advisor. I have come to trust his knowledge and judgment immensely and I feel fortunate that we’ll be able to lead this office together.”
Goff served “three separate terms” as a senior advisor at NE, the press release said. Before that, he was assistant director for nuclear energy and senior policy advisor in the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Goff also held research and management positions at Idaho National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory, and has authored publications on fuel cycle issues such as high-level nuclear waste development, DOE said.
Goff has a bachelor’s degree, Master of Science, and Ph.D in nuclear engineering from Georgia Tech.
