DOE Announces $5M Workforce Opportunities Grant in Savannah River Site Area

By ExchangeMonitor

The Graniteville, S.C.-based Savannah River Site Community Reuse Organization has received a $5 million, five-year grant to prepare students for careers supporting the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management and National Nuclear Security Administration.

The Workforce Opportunities in Regional Careers (WORC) program “will support and enhance the nation’s environmental management efforts by increasing the number of qualified candidates with environmental technology based skills at” the Savannah River Site, DOE said in a press release Monday. “The objective of the project is to provide nuclear science education programs that enable students to develop critical skills needed for careers supporting DOE-EM and NNSA’s nuclear missions. The diversity of the individuals in the target groups will ensure a steady supply of workers for many years to come.”

The nonprofit SRS Community Reuse Organization focuses on economic development in five counties near the DOE facility — Aiken, Allendale, and Barnwell counties in South Carolina and Richmond and Columbia counties in Georgia.
