Work on a new cleanup project to bring down structures at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Old Town Section should soon begin once documentation preparation is completed, officials said in April. The Lab’s Old Town section covers seven buildings totaling approximately 56,000 gross square feet and four concrete slabs remaining from former buildings, mostly constructed during World War II and immediately after. Work “should be able to start this year” depending on when all the documents have been prepared, lab spokesman Jon Weiner said in a written response.
The progress on the project comes after the lab started in March 2014 a procurement for the subcontract, which was awarded in December to Dynamic Management Solutions. The lab and the Department of Energy did not provide cost and schedule details when asked recently, but a sources sought notice from last year stated the work is expected to take 180 days and cost between $14 million and $19 million. “In December 2014, we awarded a Deactivation and Demolition subcontract to Dynamic Management Solutions (DMS) to complete demolition of three buildings, four concrete slabs and an electrical pad and remove any associated contaminated soil in the Old Town section of the Laboratory,” Weiner said in a written response. “Work will begin after document preparation concludes. The Department is on schedule to complete this work ensuring the safety of our workers, the public and the environment.”
