The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) of Australia will join with AGL Energy, Brown Coal Innovation Australia, and Japan’s IHI Corp. to launch the PICA post-combustion capture research project at the AGL Loy Yang brown coal-fired power station in southeastern Victoria. The two-year project seeks to “examine the energy efficiency of CO2 capture configurations, the effectiveness of two new solvents into which CO2 will be absorbed, and measure the total amount of CO2 removed,” according to a CSIRO release issued on Friday.
The project aims for a 40 percent reduction in the energy use of current capture processes to reduce the parasitic load of the technology.
“Without doubt, this PICA project will be a great catalyst for the future of low-emissions technologies in both the Australian and Japanese coal and energy industries,” IHI Vice President of Energy and Plant Operations Koji Yahagi said in the release.
