Quebec-based carbon capture technology developer CO2 Solutions has reached an agreement with Fibrek General Partnership, a subsidiary of Resolute Forest Products Inc., and Serres Toundra Inc. to deploy a carbon capture unit on a pulp mill in the Saint-Félicien region of the Canadian province. “We are very proud to achieve the significant milestone of a first commercial agreement for the use of our technology alongside first-class partners,” CO2 Solutions President and CEO Evan Price said in a press release.
The project, which carries a $7.4 million (CAD) price tag, is expected to capture up to 30 metric tons of CO2 per day from the Resolute softwood kraft pulp mill for transportation to Serres Toundra’s neighboring vegetable greenhouse.
The project, which will improve the performance of the greenhouse while also reducing emissions from the pulp mill, is being funded in part by $2.4 million (CAD) from Sustainable Development Technology Canada. Resolute and Serres Toundra are to make in-kind contributions of $0.3 million and $0.1 million, respectively.
CO2 Solutions is working to secure public and private funding for the rest of the project. “Subject to the realization of certain financing steps in the coming months, CO2 Solutions expects to complete the commissioning of the CO2 capture unit by the end of 2017 and realize first revenues relative to the Agreement in 2018,” the release says.
“We are excited to be working with CO2 Solutions on this project,” said Éric Dubé, president of Serres Toundra, in the release. “We expect that, through the project, Serres Toundra will gain a lower-cost supply of CO2 while improving the environmental performance of our operations through greater integration with the pulp mill.”
