CNS seeking interested parties to deliver furnace to alloy uranium for Y-12

Consolidated Nuclear Security seeks information from entities interested in delivering a vacuum arc remelt furnace to the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn., a Thursday notice said.

According to the notice, responses by interested parties are due by Sept. 30. Site prime Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS) would use the information from the responses to the expression of interest notice to structure a request for proposal.

The vacuum arc remelt furnace must be capable of alloying high purity depleted uranium at the Y-12 complex, which builds nuclear weapon secondary stages. CNS has managed the Y-12 complex since 2014.

Any responses would be reviewed over a two-week period. A supplier would be selected, based on bid responses, to design, fabricate, and test the furnace, the notice said.

A request for proposal is forecasted to be issued in May 2025, the proposals are forecasted to be due July 2025, and a contract would be awarded October 2025.
