The security contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina has not yet received a contract extension, with the current award set to expire Monday.
In an email Thursday afternoon, a DOE spokesperson said there was no update on the contract situation for Centerra, a Florida-based company that provides access control, property protection, law enforcement, and other security support services at the 310-square-mile complex near Aiken, S.C.
Centerra-SRS, a subsidiary of the parent company, began work in October 2009 on its 10-year, $990 million contract. In a procurement notice posted in August, DOE said the company would receive a four-month extension to continue its work, potentially followed by two, four-month options for a total of one year.
If both are exercised, the contractor would remain on the job through Oct. 7, 2020. The Energy Department has not released the total potential value of the extension, but said the extra time “will enable the continued protection of Government owned or leased property” while the Energy Department continues searching for a follow-on security provider.
The agency recently said Centerra extension should provide enough time to secure the next deal, which will be worth $1 billion over a 10-year span.
