A veteran of 28 years in the commercial nuclear power industry is the new acting manager for the U.S. Department of Energy office that oversees the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico.
Greg Sosson was apparently appointed to the temporary detail in December, according to the Carlsbad Field Office website.
Sosson joined the department in November 2015 as chief of nuclear safety, associate deputy assistant secretary for field operations oversight, and chief security officer for the Office of Environmental Management.
“During his tenure at DOE, he worked closely on restart activities and continuing operations at WIPP,” according to Sosson’s bio on the Carlsbad website.
Sosson joined DOE after working with New Jersey-based power company Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) in various management positions since January 2004. At the time he left PSEG, Sosson was in charge of making post-Fukushima upgrades and analysis to all the company’s nuclear power plants as required by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Sosson also worked as a manager at Exelon Nuclear’s Limerick power plant in Pennsylvania from late 1998 to early 2004. Prior to that he was a shift supervisor and technical adviser at PECO Energy. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, having attained the rank of captain.
With Sosson’s appointment as acting manager, Kirk Lachman returns to his post as deputy manager for the Carlsbad Field Office. Lachman filled the role of acting manager after Carlsbad Field Office Manager Todd Shrader was promoted to the No. 2 job in the Energy Department’s nuclear cleanup office in June. Lachman has worked in DOE operations and management posts for more than 27 years.
