Canadian Government Unveils New Fossil Fuel Project Principles

The Canadian government has released a list of new guiding principles for the approval of fossil fuel projects. The principles include a declaration that project decisions will “be based on science, traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples and other relevant evidence,” that the views of the public and affected communities will be considered, that indigenous peoples will be meaningfully consulted, and that “direct and upstream greenhouse gas emissions linked to the projects under review will be assessed.”

The Pembina Institute, a Canadian environmental group, praised the announcement. “We welcome the five principles unveiled today by the federal government to address deficiencies in the existing review process for fossil fuel projects. These principles demonstrate that Ottawa is committed to improving the ways in which fossil fuel infrastructure is evaluated,” Erin Flanagan, federal policy director at the Pembina Institute, said in response to the additional review principles.
