The CH2M-led Canadian National Energy Alliance team has won the contract to manage the Government-owned Contractor-operated contract for the Chalk River Laboratories, the Canadian Minister of Natural Resources Greg Rickford announced this week. The CNEA team also includes the Fluor Government Group – Canada, Inc.; EnergySolutions Canada Group LTD.; SNC-Lavalin Inc.; and Rolls-Royce Civil Nuclear Canada Ltd. “We are pleased that the Government of Canada is confident in our team’s ability to successfully and safely transform the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and secure Canada’s role in the global nuclear marketplace,” CNEA President and CEO Mark Lesinski said in a statement. “CNEA brings a successful track record and extensive nuclear experience that will bring enormous benefits to the decommissioning and clean-up program, and in ensuring that Canada’s world-class nuclear science and technology capabilities continue to grow and are recognized globally.” A dollar amount for the contract has not yet been announced, but Canada expects to finalize a contract with CNEA within the next couple months.

The contract calls for the management of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s nuclear laboratories, including the Chalk River Laboratories, the Whiteshell Laboratories, the three prototype reactor sites and the Laprade heavy water storage site under a Government-owned Contractor-operated (GoCo) model. Three other teams, including one led by BWX Technologies, one led by URS Canada, and one led by Bechtel, had all made it to the Request for Proposal stage. As of press time, it remained unclear if any would challenge the decision.
